Shop for a good Swap?
Shop in STL for a good Swap?
Like it says. I have a '96 V6 Camaro and I thinking about selling it and getting a '96 or '97 Z28 , but these days it doesn't look like I'm going to get much for my V6.
Does anyone know of any good shops in the Missouri/Illinois area that would do a good LT1 swap and what they would charge? Let me know how long you think it would take, cuz i know shops charge by the hour. My car is a Y87 car so there are a few things i'm not going to have to change if i do it, like the rear disc breaks, rearend (already have 3.42's and LSD), same Z28 steering column etc.
Also, if you guys think I could get the money I'm looking for on my V6, let me know....it has 93,000 miles with the mods i have in my sig. I'm hoping for at least 5,000 if i sell it.

Re: Shop for a good Swap?
Dony know anyone in STL, but i know a guy here who did a v6 to ls1 in one day. They had the ls1 k member and front suspension, and just pulled the v6 out the bottom, and slid the ls1 in its place, bolted it in. Then all was left was the wiring conversion.
Re: Shop for a good Swap?
Hmm, that's pretty quick, 1 day. Thanks for the reply Altjar.
Other midwest people chime in please
. Still looking for something closer and possibly some ideas about cost.

Re: Shop for a good Swap?
I would be VERY surprised if you got anything close to $5000 for the car. It's sad, but unfortunately that's how the market is on these cars right now.
Question. Why not attempt to do it yourself? If you can find some space, it's not that big of a deal. Just take it one step at a time and I'm sure you'll be more pleased with the results than if a shop did it for you.

Re: Shop for a good Swap?
I agree with you. I'm just hoping for that much if I did sell it. I bought it for $4,200 when it had 73,000 on it, but it needed a tranny rebuild I found out and new tires so it ended up costing me about $7,000. Now it has 93,000 on it and it sucks that there is a chance that I might not even get when I paid for it in the beginning
. That's how it goes i guess.
Plus I'm paying a loan on it right now. I think I have around $4,500 or a little less left on it right now. If I sold it I would want at least enough to pay the rest of the loan off, but with what I might get for it, that might be a little "iffy".
I've thought plenty about doing a swap ever since I first bought it. I've never had experience with working on cars until this one. I installed headers almost by myself and I installed rear suspension by myself. So there is a good chance I could do this swap myself, it would just take me getting started and I would probably get it finished OK.
The only thing is, I don't know anyone that is experience with taking out F-body engines in my area that can help me. This is my daily driver and it would be hard to find time to do it myself. I just think it would be easier and safer to get it done by a shop so that I don't have any headaches about it.
Would I need to supply a shop with the engine, tranny, fuel pump, etc.? or would they be able to find the things needed and let me know when they have them so i can bring in the car?
The other question I still need, Does anyone know of a good shop to do it in/near my area?

Re: Shop for a good Swap?
You need to take into account that after a MINUMUM of $1500 invested in swap parts. (engine etc) The shop will probably charge you another $1000 on top of that.
The reason I say minimum is that you may be able to get the engine, wiring harness, pcm, etc for ~$1200 or so, but it's the small parts you didn't plan for that will bring a significant amount on top of that.
So let's say it's all done. If you ever consider selling it, you STILL won't be able to get 5000 for it. Trust me. A V8 in a V6 body does not really raise its price that much.
So unless you plan to do the work yourself in order to cut down on some of those costs, I would say that it's not worth the time and money spent. Just sell your car for what you can and invest the money you would put into the engine and parts into a Z28. I'd also remove any mods you have and sell them since they will not make a difference in the sale price.

Re: Shop for a good Swap?
Yea you're right. I'm just looking to have a Z28.
I guess if i want to sell my V6 I should probably get rid of my Flowmaster muffler and just get a Z28 takeoff muffler? That's the only thing people would notice not being stock because of the sound. People aren't going to notice the sound of headers that much on a stock muffler I wouldn't think.
I guess as long as i get close enough money for my car to what's left on the loan I can always make up the difference a little bit with my own money in savings. Hopefully a Z28 is soon to be.
