SES light goes on and off on occasion...more inside?

I've seen that problem where the SES light comes on once in awhile. For example mine goes off when the car is idling at a stoplight or something, but comes back on the minute I start to go. Hasn't really seemed to cause any problems that I've noticed but I'm sick of the light being on. I did a search and I can't find any of the info I've seen before about it. Can anyone help me out. I went to Autozone today to have em run the code but the guy said the key he had for it won't work and they don't have the right one. So I dunno what the problem is. My buddy who is a mechanic has a Snapon scanner that he's gonna try to bring home from work so we can hook it up. But I would like to try and diagnose the problem either before hand or especially if he can't borrow the scanner. Thanks in advance.

my car was doing something similar and it turned out to be the air pump. for my car, a 96, it was a recall if i remember correctly.

when it was scanned it said something like secondary auxilary air injection malfunction or something to that effect.

good luck figuring it out.

I don't know what year your car is, but scanning is the best way to tell what is going on. The SES comes on for a reason and that reason is stored in the computer. Why guess?

Yeah I agree. I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction to look. It's mainly in anticipation of my buddy possibly not being able to get the scanner. The car is a 95 Z btw. Thanks

I had a similar problem, believe it or not the dealer found it, first try. It was a chaffed wire in the MAF harness.

I had the same issues when I first got my ride... it was an Exhaust issue... Came on and off when it wanted to... I still ahve no idea why... changed out EGR and all same light ... never stopped till I did the HEaders... then it went away... Guess it was the car just telling me she was tired of the stock Manifolds.
