Question SES light on 94 T/A - how to read?

I already searched the boards for an answer but had no luck so I'm gonna post this here.

I was driving around in the rain a few nights ago and the SES light on my 94 T/A came on. AFAIK, it hasn't made any difference to performance but it sure as hell is annoying to have that bright yellow thing on all the time. It comes on about 2 minutes after I start driving and stays on until I shut it off. The passenger side cooling fan also comes on with the SES light. It's making the car run way too cold all the time.

I was wondering if there's any way I can pull the codes on this car with a paper clip like I can on my 88 IROC. Or will I have to get a scanner?

My roommate's got a Scanmaster hooked up to his 87 Buick Grand National. Can I just take it out and use it to pull codes from my car or are these things ECM specific, i.e. does the Scanmaster have to be for an LT1?

Thanks for you time and help

You must use a scanner. The Scanmaster should work on your 1994.
