Angry Service Engine Soon

I hate that little light! I just started coming on this week and nothing seems obviously wrong. Durring the week while at school I only drive the car up the road about a mile to go to work. At first it would come on in the first 2-5 min. of running and not go off between the garadge and work. Tonight I took it out for a while and the light was on when I started the car. It did go off a few times when I would stop for a light or something but come right back on when I started moving. All the gauges show normal but it seems like the fans are running alot. (Mabye its just me) Anyway, any advice would be apreciated as long as it isn't "get it scanned". I know I could just get it scanned but I have no $$ and last time I got a vehicle scanned it didn't help.

Thanks again

It could be the EGR valve..... Mine was doing the same thing, but at highway speed... And it didnt throw a code, except once...

Ok....
I feel sorry for you (becuase that darn ses light is cursing) I hate that DAMN light!
The last thing you should do is get it scaned.
Check ALL youre fluid levels (coolant, oil, steering etc), check all youre wires, after youve checked everything you can I want you to take off the battery wires and leave it for a couple of minutes, then put the batery wires back on. It should go away!
If not then do not get you car scanned somewhere... do it your self!!! As a matter of fact some car scanners are really cheap, go on ebay and they sell for a whooping 49.99 and you can scan it and reset the codes as many times as you want on any obd2 car!!! Actually if you want fine tune youre car, you should get datamaster or lt1 edit! This is a completely different story, This uses youre laptop to configure youre entire PCM and also check for codes. I would never pay the 180 bucks to get my car scanned... EVER!!!

autozones around here will scan your car for free.

I would guess EGR though.

he has a 94 it is OBDI so I know through experiance that the Autozones and others wont be able to scane it. they only have OBDII or the 93 and back scanners that ground the pins and blink the codes on the ses light. So you might have to up the money and have someone pull the codes or buy the hardware and programs yourself. Just an FYI when my light was doing that same intermittant thing it was a bad connection in the MAF harness that would cause it to stumble one and then go into Speed density mode with the fans on when the SES light is on.

Uh.. yeah.. aren't you guys kinda forgetting autozone? A while back there was rumor of them stopping the free scanning but I have not witnessed or heard anything about this locally. Anyways, it only takes two seconds, they'll pull the codes and then run them and tell you what they mean (if you're too lazy to look them up yourself). Autozone is completely reliant on YOU wanting to fix your car YOURSELF so that you buy your parts from them so they help you find and addresses your auto problems cause it's clearly in their best interests. FYI they also do free "loans" on a lot of expensive or hard to come by tools.

I also have the ses light BTW. I just ignore the thing I guess.. It's because I have a 96 without any emmisson equipment - just hooker lt's and two three in pipes . Anyways, if there is any reason why your light would come on it's surely the emmission control systems - insufficient egr flow probably.

edit: well I didn't know autozone didn't scan 94 - 95 cars.. I gues that plan is out the window.. oh well. Find a friend with a scanner, that's my advice.

Wow finally there is a benefit to owning a obdII car!! Free autozone scans..[sarcasm] this makes up for the more expensive pcm products, tougher emissions, and more sensitive ses light!! [/sarcasm]

No guys, it is not a rumor! Autozone in California and in 3 other states is being sued by their states for their free service. I spoke with the manager there when I wanted to get my car scanned, and they said they dont do it anymore. They are currently being sued so after that hopefully we win and get our free ses light to go away!

I just got that SES light to stay off...I went to a goodyear to have them check out the code for me....came up with a code 29...which is the air pump (which I dont have), but I checked out the fuse and found out that it was blown, so I changed it out and it hasnt came back on yet (knock on wood)

So you may want to check your fuse (under the hood) and also check your relay...

I got two words for ya. LT1 Scanmaster. Its great. It costs a little bit of money but i have already recompensated my money from all of the codes i have thrown since i got it. Down here it costs around 75 bucks to get your car scanned. So 3 codes will pay it off. It really is a smart item to buy. You can also see if you are running lean or rich. Anyways, its worth it.
