service engine light with fan?

hey guys
so my car started showing a check engine light two weeks ago. it first started off just randomly showing up mostly on the highway when i was cruisin in 6th gear and would go off after a few minutes..

now it shows up about 5 minutes after i start driving the car. itll turn on no matter what gear i am in and i am pretty sure that its consistant with the fan turning on.
what i mean is.. this mornign for example. car is cold i drive it a few blocks the service engine light turns on and at the same time so does the electric fan. the engine is still cold not even up to operating temp but the fan turns on.

got a code reader tried to put it on the car but it said could not communicate with the car.. i tried a different reader same problem.. so i think my car is messed up.

any ideas what the service engine light is and why it comes on with the fan? maybe i need a new thermostat?

I'm pretty sure any time your engine light comes on your fans do as well.

You will need to get it scanned to see what the code is. The fans are programmed to come on in the presence of most trouble codes-that's normal.

nervekiler, you most likely got a code reader for an OBDII car. The '95 cars are tricky, as they are OBDI with an OBDII connector, and you'll get the "can not communicate" if you have the wrong code reader or scan tool.

Re: service engine light with fan?

yes it says it cannot communicate with the car.

so what do i have to do? i bought a OBDI reader and opened it up the plug was the same as my OBDII car so i returned that reader.

do i need a special plug? maybe ill just take it to the dealer and let them tell me everything thats wrong.. its a shame my expensive *** code reader dont work on my own car.. it HAS saved me from a lot of damage claims at my job though (whew)

If you already have an OBDI code reader/scan tool, you can use jumper wires on the '95 cars. Shoebox has the diagram on his site. It is also possible the fuse is blown. See if the cig lighter works, as it's on the same circuit as the connector.

??? You bought an OBD-I reader with a plug that was OBD-II? That should have been exactly what you needed.

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...artnumber=2000

that is the one that i bought. i connected it said it couldnt communicate with the vehicle.
the cigarette lighter works and stuff.

i wonder if my car is just damaged and it wont work? it really sucks though cuase today i goosed it a bit and the damn engine misfired like lost a bunch of power then was fine again.

i think ill just go to the schucks place tonight and see if they can use one of theirs to get it.. if not ill visit the dealer.. i gotta figure out. grr kinda sucks though mine doesnt work.
ill let you guys know what happened. hopefully its something simple and fixable i dont care if its an opti or something exensive.. as long as i can fix it.

That scanner comes with a couple cables, but you must have the special cable that AutoXray has to communicate with a 1995 f-body. They call it the "OBD-II cable specific for some 16-pin '94-'95 GM models".
...Or you can try adapting the OBD-I cable that came with it like this.
