Serpentine belt squeak?

I ahve this squeaking sound coming from what i think is the tensioner on the engine belt. I only hear it when the car is warm and it seems to go away when the car is revved above idle. Does anyone know if this sounds right, and how much a new tensioner would cost?
Thanks,
Jeff

Try a new belt first.

Ditto on that.

Also could be alternator bearings. To check, put a screwdriver on it and put your ear on the handle. I replaced mine at about 150K, but I have not had to replace the tension pulley yet.

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

try belt cleaner/spray, if the squeak goes away, you found your problem. Get a gatorback belt, no more squeak.

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

belt dressing will take care of that but its smart to have a good belt and not try to extend the life of a streached one

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

would it be possible for a belt to be stretched only after 1000 miles?

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

i highly doubt it. just get some belt dressing and apply it. also may want to look at all the pulleys when the engine is running. even a little wobble is a problem with belts.

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

I had a belt that didn't last but about two months before it started squeaking. And, it was a Goodyear.

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

it could be the serpentine belt tensioner bearing.

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

the tensioner is probably weak, allowing the belt to slip

Re: Serpentine belt squeak?

I found the problem, it was the bearing in the tensioner pulley. An easy fix

Gatorback belts are a line of Goodyear belts. Any worthwhile parts house should have them.
