security light randomly comes on can't start until it goes off

I have a 94 z28 with 6sp. A year ago I was having problems starting my car and the security light was coming on then after a week it just started working. 3 months ago the same problem happened with the security light so I jumpered out the pellet resistor on the key by putting resistors under the dash. This worked for a couple of months but then I noticed the security light came on while driving then went off after about 15 minutes. Now occasionally I try to start my car and light comes on and I have to wait 3 minutes for it to go off then I can start it. Only happens once in a while but seems to be happening more often now. What else would cause security light to come on???. Also I tried getting out and turning off security light by locking and unlocking the doors with key remote but that didn't disable security light I had to wait till it went off by itself.

I also have the tri power security system where I plug in this thing under the dash to start car but I'm not sure if thats connected in any way to the security light.

Sounds like your pass-key system is starting to fail. You will most likey be replacing the iginition soon.

If I disable the VATS which I found how to do on another post that said it was located in the glove box and to take the relay out and connect two wires together will that solve my problem. If so how do I get the dash apart to pull the security light bulb?

lock cylinder

I had the exact same problem with my 94 Z28. It is the lock cylinder, (the 3 inch long 1 inch wide cylinder you stick the key in). You have to buy another one from the dealer. They're about $100. You'll also have to buy a new key with the right resistance for it at the same time.

KNOW HOW THIS GOES

Had that problem and just paid a dealer 430 bucks to fix key cylinder and the rekey it as well as fix the cooked wires. Besides i want my car a little less harder to steal. Its a piece of mind thing.

It can't be the key cylinder because I have that jumper out of the circuit with a resistor. Could the VATS relay go bad? Can it be replaced? How much?

Found from an earlier post
Programming it out does not seem to get rid of the problem (I had the same problem on mine as well). My security light was on for like 2 years, then one day after working on the stereo it would not start anymore. The security light would flash a couple times, then stay solid. Tried programming it out, no go. So I just ripped the VATS relay module out and rewired the ignition system without the VATS in the loop. The module is on the right side of the glove box, you can see the little gray plastic holders sticking out. Push them in, reach around, pull out the relay module, cut the wires. Then connect the purple and brown wires together (do not wire the purple and yellow, unless you want your car to be able to start with the transmission in gear!). Then, to get rid of the annoying light, pull the bulb out of the dash for the security light.

Question lock cylinder

I read your post doubting that it's the lock cylinder and I don't know much, actually almost nothing about the wiring in the Camaro, but I have the exact same car as you and had the exact same problem. I asked someone at a GM dealer and she said that the, I think Luminas, or some other GM car with the same security set up had the same problem. I replaced the lock cylinder and the problem was gone.

Did you solder the resistor in? I would be checking to make sure that resistor is still in there properly.

just make sure....

just make sure the ignition key hole is clean and the key itself...u may want to run a cleaner on it real light...any dirt or anything will flip the VATS system....just a thought....i had the same problem...u wont need a new ignition....just my two cents...

did you ever fix it? I've got the same damn problem right now. I'm thinking about buying a vats bypass module I've seen on Ebay. What did you do to remedy the problem?

I found that it was my resistor. It must have lost contact. I need to solder the resistor in place so it doesn't happen again.
