Sealant on WP/Block surfaces?

I am about to install the water pump back onto the block. Should I use RTV on the block surfaces and water pump surfaces along with the gasket?

Also, would it hurt anything to start the car right now without the water pump on just to be sure the opti is properly installed?

Thanks

Yes you can start the engine without the water pump on.
Only to make sure the OPTI spark is on right for a short time.
Just rin it for a couple of seconds.
It's better to know it's in wrong with the water pump off that later.
You can use RTV but it might not look too pretty.
What I used is aviation glue you can get it in the auto parts store.
That way you don't see RTV.

I started it and it ran for about 2 or 3 seconds then died. I know the opti is installed properly or else it wouldn't even have started... not sure why it died though...

I would check the OPTI spark agine just to be sure.
Vented or unvented can go in wrong.
I would check over everything and try to run it agine.
Check to make sure your spark plug wires are plug in till they click.
And make sure they are in the right order.
It sould not stall unless you have something wrong.
Unless you did not put the MAF meter on?

I wipe a thin film of RTV on both sides of the w/p gasket. It helps them stay put.

I don't have my intake elbow on... could that have caused a vacuum leak? The throttle body blades have 2 holes drilled in them by the previous owner.

When I test it that way, I connect both the MAF and the IAT sensor. Just put the water pump on top of the engine for the connector to reach the IAT and start it, other wise it will produce black smoke and die. I leave it working for 15-30 sec that way.
