Is it safe to cam my car?

I want to cam my car pretty soon with this bumpstick that I just bought but I don't know if it would be a smart thing to do. It will be going in my 94 T/A with 90,000miles on the clock. I believe it has a 160 thermostat because at operating temperature it barely goes past the middle line between 160 and 210 on the temp. gauge, this is even with the A/C on and at a stoplight. On a cold start up my oil pressure will be right above 40psi and when it gets to temp. it idles at above 20psi. Of coure these numbers are according to the accurate GM gauges in the car. My car is a bolt-on car right now but I don't want my car to die right after I cam it either. By the way this will be on stock heads and I don't plan on racing much because this is my daily driver, I go to the track like once a year. I just want the power to be there when I want it. It will be tuned by Madz28 also. What do you guys think?

CC XE 227/233 cam with a 560/569 lift on a 1.6rr (114lsa)
Trend Performance 7.2 Hardened Pushrods
CC SA Pro Magnum 3/8 1.6rr
CM-612 Valve springs (fit stock head without machining) good to .600” lift
Ultra Lightweight Chromoly Valve Spring Retainers
Hardened valve locks

I'm putting that same cam (except I got the 112 LSA) in my car this weekend. Stock heads and stock bottom end (69K miles). Its an auto with a high stall, headers, blah blah blah. I'll let you know how it turns out.

It's a gamble with any LT1 with a high revving cam. Spun destroy the bottom end, some don't.

My advice to anyone planning on camming their LT1 is to make sure they have enough in their budget to cover a rebuild in case something does happen, so you won't be left w/o a car if it's your daily driver.

Man, that's a big difference in budgeting between putting in a cam and rebuilding the engine. But I don't disagree entirely either considering how many seem to bite the dust from a cam swap. I wonder if everybody should just automatically put in a front cam bearing when they do a cam on a higher mileage LT1...

Whatever you do, don't put those springs in your car. Do a search on them.

How many sets have actually snapped?

I ran 'em for 15k miles and never had a problem on my old setup.

I read more posts about those springs breaking than any other spring out there. IMO it would be smart to go with an alternative, crane makes some double valve springs that are pretty cheap and good to .700 lift, i forgot the part # but I'm running them.

Yah I was just curious, I don't ever plan on running them again, my setups will only get bigger from here on out

Re: Is it safe to cam my car?

I run the 227/233 on a 112. It is a nice cam. good low end grunt and top end pull. It has a nice sound to it, and has pretty good street manners. I have been running that cam with cm 612 springs with no problems thus far. Although I dont drive it that much as it isnt my daily driver

Re: Is it safe to cam my car?

Look man, dont throw in the biggest cam you can possibly buy in a motor thats not built for it, my cam is a CC269 and it does veeeeery well. It specifically recommends a 'modified exhaust and performance chip' so its a mild cam that fits well into a car thats just a step over stock, while i was down i did not take annnnnny chances, replaced my lifters, pushrods and rocker arms, she runs beeeeauuutiiiifuuuuul, awesome lobing idle, very nice top end powerm the cam is designed to make power from 1,500 - 5,500 RPMs which is juuuuust right for me seeing as i dont like spinning my bottom end that high.
my motor has over 140k on it, and i have nooooo problem.
either way you go, a cam is a gamble, whether the motor has 40k or 140k, if the engine has not been properly maintained or the cam is shoved wrecklessly into the block, it could fail. Its your choice, but if you want a cam and you have good oil pressure, go for it!
