Apparently, you don't understand how an alternator works, so maybe you should do some reading up on how one works, then maybe you will understand my post.

no this thread is stupid because if you think about it an average battery weighs like 30-40 lbs... every 100lbs is worth a 1/10th of a sec!

so! ONE either take out your battery and barely gain anything and risk stressing your alternator!

TWO remove the belt, protect all your accessorys (alt, ps pump, etc) and gain PROVEN power by putting less drag on the engine! HMMMM???

Sure, Ill try to help. The alternator has a battery voltage "sence" wire, this wire tells the alternator how much voltage the battery has, to determine the output that is needed from the alternator. You remove battery, this wire sees 0 volts, tells alternator to go full charge, or wide open like I said in my previous post. This makes the alternator charge at the highest rate it can, which it will for awhile, but how long I'm not sure.

CSJTA .. if anything this will help in my favor !!! i doubt running the alternator for 2-3 minutes max at full charge will hurt it !! (wait in line, burnout, stage, run, back to the pit) meanwhile its producing a lot of current making sure my fuel pump is well fed

Injected .. with all due respect, i think pulling ut belt is a lot "stupider"... if for any reason ur battery isnt up for it and u lose any current to ur pump and lean out at the end of the track there goes ur pretty motor !

either way .. everyones entitiled to their opinion .. thats how u squeeze power out of ur car ... wish u the best ! im not gonna pull my belt !

If you disconnect the battery from the circuit, as stated before, the alternator will see no resistance and go to full output. In one or two seconds, every diode in the alternator will destroy itself. Just lifting the cable off briefly to "check" this fact of life will be enough to destroy the alternator.
When a battery is discharged, it has lower internal resistance, and this is why the charging system will show 12.5 or 13 volts but have a high current flow. As the battery nears full charge, the resistance goes up, so the battery voltage will be nearer 14 or 14.2 volts, and the current goes down. But it is the battery that provides the resistance to allow the alternator to regulate its output. So forget about removing the battery.
If you are still keen to do this, let me know so I can come over and watch. I like smoke.

Cool

I'll usually pop my belt off right before I get to the burnout box. Always make sure the battery is full charge though. If the battery isn't up to it, it's worthless. Get to the end of the track and pop it bakc on.. You get good at it after awhile

When the car was stock, I concistently ran 3/10th's quicker on seperate occasions doing this Now i'm worried about traction

Quote from the factory manual:

NEVER disconnect generator "BAT" terminal with generator assembly operating.
This would be the same as removing your battery and isolating the alternator (generator is it's official name ). For reasons already stated, you will fry your alternator. One thing you don't want to screw up in these cars is the electrical system. That is when nightmares and hair pulling begin.

Taking the belt off may net some hp, BUT your battery better have plenty of reserve power to handle it. If voltage drops enough, so will fuel pressure and spark energy.
