RTV for water pump gasket...

Has anybody ever used RTV ultra copper for a water pump seal, and not used the gasket? What about for the timing cover?

I'm wondering if that would make a better seal than a gasket... I'm thinking it would. Has anybody done it?

I haven't, and wouldn't do so. I'd recommend using gaskets with a 'light smear' of RTV for added sealing.

There are some engines out there (IE: Ford) that uses just a sealant(like Victor Reinz JV66B), Permatex Right Stuff, etc. for oil pans and other applications, but its from the factory that way.... If it comes with a gasket, use the gasket....

But as stated above by Don 97 SS , thats the best way......

I spray a light coat of aerosol ultra copper on the WP side of the gaskets, so when I take the pump off the gaskets come off in one piece, with the pump. Lots easier to clean the pump side to replace them, as opposed to the block. I do this on other paper gaskets and frequently there is no gasket damage on removal, and they stay perfectly aligned, so I reuse. Like clutch covers on dirt bikes, mower carbs, other less-critical items. But I wouldn't use just RTV even if it DID work, except in a pinch. You would have to pry the parts apart, and scrape all surfaces clean, every time.
