Can,t the valve fall into the cylinder if you remove the keeper?

 

If the piston is at TDC the valve will only fall about 1/4 of an inch. That's why you do one cylinder at a time. Most of the time the valve will stay up do to the valve seal, if the valve loosely fall downs it might be a good time to change the valve seals.
