Angry RR Studs keep breaking???

Ok.. i dont know whats goin on here so i have to ask for some help... In the last 8 days i have broken 5 rr studs.. the first 3 where the 5th one back on the drivers side... the 4th was the 7th one back on the drivers side and then then 6th one back on the drivers side... i just got done replacing the 6th one.. started it up and after about 2 min of idle i heard another one break on the passanger side.. its almost 6pm on sat. and nowhere around here has any , so my car will have to sit till monday.. the forst 16 i put in where pro-forms.. i have so far replaces 2 of them with Crane and the other 3 with more pro-forms... my mechanic installed the first set and one of the replacements when it broke.. and i replaced the next 4.. all are properly adjusted and when they arent breaking the car runs great. Do you guys have any idea what would be causing these to break?!?! Could it just be because they are weak and crappy studs? or something else? This is getting extremely aggrivating and im not sure what to do first. any help would be appreciated.

Did you ever change the springs? If not they are binding, more than likely the cause.

Here is the chain of events that built up to this.....

Had a comp cam 305 installed
all new lifters
all new hardend push rods
still using my old crane gold 1.6 rr's
had guide plates put on because i didnt like the design that had the head gasket guiding the push rods.

The springs were left alone when the above mentioned things had been done. I had no problems with studs until this point.. and now they are breaking at the rate of 1 every day and a half. does anything in that combo not match up? and if the springs do need re-placing.. how much am i looking at for parts? and is this something i should be able to do?

Are you saying that you are running a comp 305 with 1.6 rockers with the stock LT1 springs? If so then that is your problem. Stock springs are only good for .490 & thats pushing it. A 305 with 1.6's is running .544. You are in severe coil bind. Change your springs immediatly before worse problems are encountered. Also the stock rocker setup is self aligning, the headgasket has nothing to do with guiding the pushrod. Have agood one.

Agreed, coil-bind..... piston to valve can cause it but that's not gonna be the case here.
Don't know the springs Comp recommends right off hand but you should use their recommendation.

Good luck.

Go with crane cams 10308 spring kit. I comes with everything you will need. Also you might as well replace the valave seals while your in there. Man you car will run soo sweet with the new springs, good luck bro~~~~~~rob

Might want to post in the Florida section to see if someone with experience will help you out. It's not a big job but it would help to have someone who knows what they're doing to help.

You need a spring compressor. You might can rent one from AutoZone or one of the auto centers in your area. Then you compress the spring pull the keepers (a magnet is nice for steel keepers) and the rest is pretty obvious from there.
You need to check everything when you get the springs on. You need to have the correct installed height. Comp Cams has this info on their website.... along with their spring recommendation for the CC306. Check it out.

If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM, I'll help you as best I can.

Do a search for street illusions racing....They have a cam install, which also shows the springs. Also go to Comp Cams website and you will find what they recommend..I paid like 260 for everything...springs,locks,retainers,and seats

It would be likely that you have some bent pushrods also. You ought to check them too.

Also are the crane gold that you have self aligning or not. If you are using the self aligning with guide plates it will cause problems.

Wouldnt the lifter collapse before the rocker stud broke? I would check the lifters out as well.

Replacing springs is not a job for a novice. You can cause yourself some serious problems if you don't know all the details. Read up on all the suggestions before you get into it.
I think coil bind was suggested before.
