Rocker and false knock questions...

is it possible to get false knock from your exhuast hitting on something? the shop woudlnt change the mufflers bacuse they woudlnt fit, but they did re-hang the exhuast (it was hitting going over bumps and idling before) and it seems like its picked up a LOT of tq down low... cause tonight i was mildly into it and it kicked the rear out way too far.. i had to stop to get it back (close call) anyway my main question here is about the stock rockers, if they begin to tick after age and time, is it possible just re-adjusting them could fix it? im rebuilding in spring and not lookin into doin rockers twice, so im lookin to either get rid of the tick by adjusting the stockers or get some advice on the best ones to buy that i wont have to worry about re-doing when i get the heads done. also the LE package does it come with rockers? i know it comes with springs but i coudlnt find anything about the rockers... if not i may go ahead and just have mine replaced!

thanks in advance for any help!!!

can anyone at least tell me about the rockers? its just a slight tick coming from the driverside sounds like its towards the front, im just curious if its possible to adjust it out or if they have to be replaced completely to get rid of it (at least for 5-6 months)

It is possible that that one rocker came a little loose over time, it is also possible that its not getting good oil which I doubt. When I upgraded from my stocker I used the GMPP 1.6 RR's which you can buy alone or w/ the hotcam. They are good gains w/ a stock cam and help out a lot on top, they are also direct replacments self aligning and require no valve cover modifications. They are also cheap I got mine for $150 slight used I see some going for sale in the sales forum for $175 today. Also when yo uget the 1.6 rockers you will need LT4 or stronger springs. You can get those for like 25$. You may also want to look into the lt4 locks/retainers as well to give you peice of mind.

thanks thatll be a good replacement at least until the rebuild if i dont decide to keep them after that. now for the other half of the rockers, is it possible to adjust out the looseness it gained over the years? in this one case i dont mind about it not being perfect cause like i said im planning a rebuild around spring so used is def a great option too lol

Re: Rocker and false knock questions...

I have read that the self-aligning rockers are louder than NSA. For those of you with the GMPP self-aligning 1.6 RRs, what is your opinion on the noise increase? Also, does self-aligning vs. non-self-aligning have much of an effect of power or anything else???

Re: Rocker and false knock questions...

well no one ever answered my question as to if the exhuast was hitting something could it send that knock far enough back up the pipes to set a knock retard... but anyway i was also told the rockers couldnt just "loosen up" over the years that it was probly a lifter starting to wear causing the rocker to tick somehow... and i remember my dads car did something similar when he completely mushroomed a lifter.. that is until it was too bad to run on that cylinder.

Re: Rocker and false knock questions...

Readjust the valves and it should be fine.
Any noise over and above what the KM was tuned for will cause retard. It could be pipes on the frame, lifters tapping, just anything that isn't stock engine sound. The resonance of headers will do it,exhaust leak, etc.
