rocker adjustment

The car started with 1/3 of a turn on the adjusting nut the first time after i adjusted the lifters. The lifters didn't sound right so I readjusted them using 1/4 turn. The car wouldn't start after the 1/4 turn adjustment. Since then I've readjusted the rockers several times at 1/4 and 1/2 turn. I was just told by someone to try 1/8 of a turn because the valves may not be closing causing me not to get any compression. Is this a good idea or would somthing more like 3/4 turn be a better idea. I'm so frustrated right now! Oh yea, I also installed comp R lifters. Thanks in advance.

I would say ¼ min to ½ max. You might have coincidentally done something else to cause the no-start condition.

I think your problem is determining what zero lash is.

Zero lash is when the pushrod can no longer move up or down. Not when you can't turn it.

From that point you tighten it to about a 1/3 of a turn.

Are you sure its the lifters that are noisy? Roller rockers are noisier than stockers.

Hey thanks Shoebox! But why would it seem to crank hard at one point in the rotation of the crank like the compression isn't right. I've checked the fuel pressure and spark which are both good. The car actually fired earlier but only ran for a second or two but didn't sound right. The car seems to almost want to backfire when it is cranked over too.

Sorry Gripenfelter I ment to say rockers. yea 0 lash with these comp pro mags seems to be just about when the adjustment nut stops turning by hand.

What is worse...overtightening say at 3/4 of a turn or loose at say 1/8 turn?

From that description, I would say you are not getting some of the lifters on the base circle of the cam when adjusting them. Therefore, some may be too tight. You might want to use method 3 from my site. Not sure how you are doing it, now. Perhaps your pulley arrow is not oriented properly (if you are using it for locating purposes).

Ok Shoebox you've convinced me. I was using the method you described as method 2 and also method 1. OK I'm crossing my fingers for the 6th time here. Thanks again
