Rob..Help with a fuel smell please
I was hoping to run a fuel smell problem by Rob or anyone who wants to read about it. I replaced the fuel system from tank up to the fuel rails. I sumped the tank removed the old fuel pump and replaced it with a Aeromotive mounted on the frame rail. While tearing out the old fuel lines I removed the lines and vapor canister from the rear of the car.
The only thing left on the top of the tank is the vent line and check valve for breathing in the tank. The bottom sump now has the main and return lines gong to it.
Here's the problem. As long as I am drawing fresh air in the ventilation system there is NO smell. But if I shut off the ventilation system or go to recirculate, the fuel smell returns. Now I know I have removed the vapor system and there is the problem but I thought as long as the fuel system is pumping fuel out of the tank, there has to be air going IN the vent tube to the tank.
I don't see how fuel smell could come out of the vent line, I put the check valve back on the line. Pressure by the way is dead nuts on 43 PSI.
Any ideas would help Thanks
Dave

I am going to say that since there is no EVAP, you will have a problem with fumes. The fumes are there all the time, but you only notice them when you don't have positive air pressure in the cabin.
I would imagine that the return line puts pressure back into the tank and now will be going out your simple vent instead of being fed back into the engine with the EVAP system.
