Richmonds and noise?
Richmonds and noise?
I can get a rear with new richmond 3.42's and all new guts for very cheap, but it's got a little bit of a whine too it. Right now I have a rear end that needs new gears, seals, bearings, etc, etc which will cost more than the cost of this rear.
Question is, do richmonds naturally have a little bit of a whine or is this something that could get worse and louder and louder over a little time?

I have a eaton posi trac with richmond pro gears(3.73) in my car. Yes they will whine. Its not to bad though. I have had mine for about 16k miles and the noice levels have not gone up that i can tell.
A little bit of noise is normal. If you have to yell over the noise due to volume, then there's something wrong, but a little bit is normal. My strange's whine from about 40-44mph. From what I've seen, ALOT of gears whine in that range, so to the guy who posted before about his gears whining at 40mph, it's normal man.
The instruction papers that came with my gears even said a little whine is normal. Don't let it bother you unless like I said, it's loud and annoying.

Yeah, I have a different set of 3.73's in my car now and they were fine for a long time then all of a sudden they just got deafening loud, my pinion started leaking, and all these problems.
So I want to get this whole new rear and install it, then fix my current later with some 4.10's when I have time and more money to do it up.
Anyway thanks for the info.. I'll probably go ahead with this cuz a little noise is a big improvement from what I got now.

I have a set of Richmond 3.70's in my Vette which I set up myself. No whine whatsoever. Well lets put it this way, it would have to be really loud for me to hear it over the rumbling big block under the hood. My cutlass had 3.42 richmonds in it as well, no whine, but was professionally set up. Did have the tools I have now back then. I wish I still owned that cutlass.

The whine is from the nickel content in the gears to make them stronger. More nickel = more whine = stronger, less whine= less nickel = weaker.
