Rethinking cam selection..........any advice?
Rethinking cam selection..........any advice?
Here are the specs of the cam I have sitting in my room (pulled off of combination's site):
SCC-230XL
XTREME Comp Cams 230XH Camshaft, 230/242 duration @ .050", .510"/.540" lift with 1.5 rockers, .544"/.576" lift with 1.6 rockers.
I have 1.6 rockers and got a package through combination motorsports (great guys!). I initially got it because I also have an NX kit in my room and was told this would be a good cam for the combo and that I could pass emissions when the time came, though it would take some work. I will be using the stock heads for awhile but plan on having them ported and polished towards the end of this year beginning next year (car doesn't see winter duty, god bless MA, lol).
Well, since this all happened I have come across an emissions guy who is 'willing to work with me' (take that for what it is worth) so I basically have no more emissions concerns and am considering upgrading to something a little bigger. Would you guys do it? If so, what would you get? I'd prefer to deal with combination morosports again and see if they would trade me for a bigger one if possible.
Anyone's opinions welcome!
Thanks,
Brian

I got a cam kit from CM awhile back and i got the XE 230/236XL
and my heads are being done by AI, i decided to wait til they arrive with a flow sheet and have a custom grind made to my cars needs, so i sold the XE cam and springs and kept the rockers that were in the kit, i feel you will be much happier with a cam for your car, rather than an off the shelf cam, especially if you're gonna have P&P heads

Yeah, the specs are CC306ish but its designed more for nitrous, and I have the cam sitting in my room right now. I am feeling like I want to go a little bigger though..........Car currently has all the bolt ons and is an M6 83k miles if that helps.

why go bigger? all its gonna do is give you 10-15 hp way up high rpms, move powerband probably out of the usable rang depending how the heads are, take away low end, and give you more wear on the valvetrain. stay with that cam
yeah, I'm gunning to shift in the 6200ish range.........so I guess if the next higher cam will bump me out of that range then it won't be worth it. Sounds like I am good where I am, unless there is something just a tad bigger that may work.
Thanks

SCC-230HL
HIGH ENERGY Comp Cams 230HL Camshaft, 230/242 duration @ .050", .560"/.551" lift with 1.5 rockers, .598"/.587" lift with 1.6 rockers. Larger cam for street/strip use, excellent top end.
What do you think about using this cam with 1.5 rockers, vs. the one that I have with 1.6? This way when I redo my engine I can have some higher numbers if I want em.
Thanks

You're going to be shifting way past 6200 even with the cam you have right now. If you go bigger, you'll shift even higher. A 230/242 is a really big cam for stock heads. My 224/230 (.53X/.54X, 112 LSA) is still pulling hard at the 6400 RPM rev limiter, even with stock heads.

We have the plug-in here (and I know a guy, hehe), so as long as my CPU is happy I will be ok in that respect. Sounds like my best bet is to stick with the cam I have now and 1.6rr's. If I got the bigger cam with 1.5rr's would it really make that much of a difference? going from a 544/576 to a 560/551? How would they be different?

Combo actually sent me a 113 lsa when i ordered a 112. Then when i contacted them about echanging it they had no problem with me bumping it down to a 111. I don't work there but i bet they'll be willing to let you exchange it.
Good luck.
I may shift as high as 6400 when racing at the track (shifting right over peak). I think stock heads for now will limit the top end power of it. So maybe I should consider going a little smaller? I'm also looking to do well with the N2O also.......This stuff is confusing!

Just figure out what you want to do with the car, then pick a cam. If you want to keep it under 6200 RPM, especially once you get the heads done, that isn't the right cam. When I was looking for a cam I found it much easier to just talk to people who know their stuff, rather than try and figure out all the variables on my own. It's a lot less confusing. Call combination and tell them you want a good nitrous cam that you can shift at 6200-6400 RPM. My guess is they would reccomend the 218/230 or 224/236 XE grinds.
Yeah, when I got in on the GP they said the cam was a little big, and that with the stock heads I'd be ok shifting at like 6200 or so, but with a nice stage 3 port I'd be pushing 6400-6500 shifts, which is a little high on the stock bottom end IMO. I talked to a few others and they said DO NOT go any bigger than the one I have now, but also that I really did not need to go any smaller. Do you have any dyno numbers/track times with the new cam?
