Retainers on Comp 850-16 lifters...

Below is a pic of a set of 850-16 lifters I just purchased for my heads/cam install. Just curious, aren't these the same type of square retainer clips (the gold part) that the Comp R's had? I thought these were an OK alternative using Snap-rings...

Thoughts? Should I send these back?

That's what I was hoping to hear

I saw the pics of the Comp R's and saw all the broken parts to be underneath the lifter plunger I thought.. I guess that's the weak part on those?

Gotcha.. I noticed the stock lifters have the same setup as these.. for some reason I thought they were snap ring type.

Nothing to see here, carry on

That's what I used in my 383 and they work fine. FWIW, look real close at the pushrod cups. When I got my set from Summit, I saw that 4 out of the 16 had what looked like pits in the seat where the pushrod would ride. I called Comp Cams and complained about the quality. They said it would probably be OK, but had me return them anyway, and sent me 4 new ones. One other thing, the pushrod seat depth in the Comp Cams 850's are quite a bit different from the stock GM lifters, so after checking the rocker arm geometry, I ended up using 7.050" pushrods.

Word to anyone reading: Always check pushrod length!

I don't know how you got it that short.... unless you decked the block a lot, milled the heads a lot and ran a really low lift cam.

I can't explain the "how"; but I used a comp cams Hi-Tech pushrod checking tool, and installed checking springs with two of the 850 lifters made solid with washers. After playing around with it a bit I was able to get a good pattern on the valve stem with the tool expanded 5 full turns. 6.8 + (5 x .050) = 7.050. I ordered comp cam Hi-Tech 7937 pushrods and checked the geometry again with them and it was good. The block is decked, I have Lloyds heads (LE1) and your cam (0.6XX lift with 1.6 Pro Mags) and using FelPro 1074 gaskets.

The one thing I noticed right off when comparing the stock GM lifters to the CC 850's is that the pushrod seat in the stock lifter is noticeably deeper, so it seems reasonable that if you use a stock length pushrod in the CC lifter it would be too long.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it

FWIW, The Summit Brand Hydro Rollers for 104 bucks accually have a crane part number stamped on them. I have been using those with good results.
