Replacing water pump drive seal question...

Ok well I am replacing my water pump drive seal tonight because its leaking like crazy after the cam swap....my question is what is the best way to put the seal on assuring that it doesn't tear? When I installed it the first time I did it after the timing cover was on and it still tore apparently. So I was wondering if there was an easier way to do it.

Thanks guys

Ever try a search? There is a trick to putting the seal on that has been explained countless times. Use the coupler or a deep socket to slide the seal on first.

Like Mr. box said you need a socket. I took the water pump shaft that connects the 2 gears, lubed it up well, and stretched the seal with my finger a lil and slide her up close then knock it home with a socket.

I did it that way the first time, that is why I posted again to see if anyone had any other ideas...

Thanks though

You just have to be careful. If you stretch the seal out like my94blackz said, it will give it a little more room to go on. The seal will not hold the memory of the stretch for long and should seal up fine.

I just used a deep well 1/2 inch socket and lubed it up with oil (the socket) and slid the seal onto it and placed it over the shaft and pushed it into place, and then took and bigger deep well socket and a rubber mallet and very slowly hit the seal into place & it worked great for me the first time...

BTW: No leaks and the seal didn't tear
