Replacing the Starter - LT4

I just posted this thread: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=333156

From what ive found using search it sounds like the starter has gone. The starter is only a year old! I'm going to order an LT4 starter in I guess.

Why did the car "klunk" for a while and what caused the whirring/electric fan sound that it made after? Does the starter gear shear off or something?

Is the LT4 starter just a direct replacement? Just put it in? Do i need any gaskets or anything else to do the job?

just an aside here, but why do you need a LT4 starter?? I don't understand the benefit.

More starting power/torque. But most importantly they are NEW, and you can only buy remanufactured LT1 starters.

As far as needing gaskets and stuff you shouldnt need anything.

EDIT: i think the LT4 starter might get in the way of some headers, you might wanna check that out and see wich ones.

Re: Replacing the Starter - LT4

One benefit for those with Longtubes is that the LT4 starter has the solenoid assembly relocated away from the hot primaries. This was what killed my LT1 starter, and with the LT4 its never been a problem. The headers would change the heat in the starter assembly so fast from cold to hot and hot to cold, that it began to cause the solenoid to stick or something. I had to get under my car and bang the solenoid part with my maglite everytime I wanted to start it.

When you bolt on the LT4 starter, at least on mine, it looks like it wont fit right and leaves open space on the flywheel casing. Its fine, just bolt it up and go. You'll notice a little more "modified" starting sound, I like it.
