Replacing head gasket tips?
I kept fouling my number 6 sparkplug and noticed I had a header leak on that side. I tightened it up but still got black exhuast dust on the heads above the 4 and 6 primaries. I am hoping that replacing the gasket while stop my exhaust leak and keep the sparkplug from fouling out. I unbolted the passenger side header and scraped off the old gasket and went to install it again with the new gasket but it is a PITA. Does anyone have any tips on reinstalling The passenger side header?

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
For longtubes I typically pull the motor mount bolt out on the passanger side, and jack up the passanger side of the motor a few inches. Slides right in.
I dont think you'd have pulled the header though just to replace the gasket. |
Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
No the header is still installed and I can push it up to the heads but can't seem to line it up good enough to get a bolt started.

Get a buddy to come over and support it from the bottom.

I guess that why I keep mine around, shes down to get dirty. I actually did it mysel, though. I stuck a piece of allen wrench (cut aff the L w/bolt cutters) in the head and hung the front of header, then support the rear and start threading. Worked for me. Hope it helps

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
Thanks. I think I'm going to stop by the hardware store and get a long bolt and cut the head off of it. I'm hoping that if I screw it in and slide the heads onto the stud I can line it up good enough to get some of the other bolts started.

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
I did that the first time. You can just buy threaded studs. Be sure to put them where you can get the vise grips in there good. Mine didnt come out to easy.

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
What size studs did you use and which holes did you put them in?

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
I think the 3rd and 5th from the frnt. Dont remember the size/pitch. Think its 3/8-16. Just take a header boltw/. Measure it there.

Re: Replacing head gasket tips?
Yeah I was going to take a header bolt with me to get the thread. I should of asked how long of a stud should I get. I thought about getting one about an inch long.
