Removing Water Pump and Opti Questions

I have the radiator, fans, alternator, intake elbow all the way back to the filter, all the hoses are out of the way, and all the bolts are out of the water pump except one.

The one is a stud, or a bolt with threads on both sides, and I think the AIR pump is going to have to be removed that sits on the drivers side, as that bolt wont come off until the bracket is moved. When I was backing the nut off, I think I cracked the bracket by it actually turning the whole thing, rather then the nut, and that presure snapped something.

So what all needs to be pulled off to comeplete this job? I could barely get the middle bolt on the passenger side out, because the pulley to the smog pump (??) was in the way, but I got it out by hand.

I am pulling the waterpump and the opti, this is on a 95 LT1. Anyone know?

Re: Removing Water Pump and Opti Questions

Youre gonna need to take the crank pulley off to get the opti outta there. The waterpump is held on by 6 9/16's bolts and it sits on dowel pins. Its gonna take a little prying off but it should slide off of the dowel pins. The opti is held on by I believe 8 bolts that are 3/8's or 10mm, I cant remember right off the top of my head. The opti should just slide off from there.

I didnt have to mess with my AIR pump but I think in 95 its located differently that on my 93.

You'll need to remove the cooling fans, coolant lines off of the water pump, intake ducting, the AIR pump and AIR pump bracket (to get to the single stud), the crank pulley, and the coil/bracket (optional). The optispark is held on by three bolts (not eight) and the water pump is held on by six 14mm bolts, one doubling as a stud. When you remove the opti, make sure that the crank snout is shaped like a Y, with 2 fingers pointing up and one pointing down. This will give you ample clearance to free the optispark from the timing cover.

Anything else needed, just ask.

Re: Removing Water Pump and Opti Questions

I did plenty of opti changes before getting rid of it. The only thing I removed in order to remove my opti was Intake tubing, water pump, and crank pulley. Everything was untouched. Now that I no longer have an opti I walk around all day like this
Ohhh and only 3 10mm bolts to remove opti. Since your pulling off all your air pump leave it off and plug up the ports on your manifolds.

Don't forget to buy new water pump gaskets and some RTV. Really sucks to remeber that half way through.

Re: Removing Water Pump and Opti Questions

you can do an opti swap with the fans on? I always took then off because I was told i would need too. I'll try it without next time... Even though fans only take 2 mins.
