Removing Cone of Silence

Removing Cone of Silence
Does anyone have a link to a guide on how to do this? Also, is there any cosmetic damage that can be seen by doing this? Is there any wasy to tell that I have it before cutting open my muffler?

I don't really know much about the topic, but I saw this link on Project Trans Am awhile ago. HTH

Oh, so they put the cone right BEFORE the muffler. Cool, I thought it was maybe inside of it. That looks like something I may be able to do myself. I'll save the $30 for the sut-out.
Anyone else think this would be too tuff to do? Maybe some PB Blaster overnight would loosen things up?

I didn't think so eihter because my exhaust sounds so aggressive,. However JeffK's build # on his '97SS is 486, and he had the cone of silence. Also, if you look on the link posted above, it states the earliest known build # to have the cone is #58. I would imagine that they would start putting them in all cars after they started that program.

I don't recall what my build # is. It was built in April of 97. It has the dual-dual exhaust pipes.
I checked just before the muffler shortly after I got it and nothing there.
Also, understood that when they went to the dual-duals that they didn't need the cone any longer to quiet it down.
So perhaps you have it. As far as I know you just need to look in the exhuast pipe where it goes into the muffler (not sure though.)

Yeah, the dual duals didn't have the cone.
Does anyone have any tips for removing/reinstalling the muffler with minimal damage? I don't want to take to a muffler shop. I don't like paying someone to do something I can do myself, no matter how little the cost.

You need an oxy-acetalene torch to heat the pipe up and remove it.At least I did, they clamped the heck out of it.Stainless steel is some tough stuff.Either that or cut a slit in the pipe.Just warning you.You might want to go to an exhaust shop.

On my 97 we just removed the clamp, heated the muffler and worked it around until it came off. Used the torch to cut a slot in the" clone " and just pulled it out. Put the muffler back on and clamped it up. Works best if you have it on a hoist so that you can better work the muffler around. Sound much better without the clone.

Err, that sucks. Maybe I'll just get cutout instaed, since I'm putting headers on soon. That way when I cap it up, it can be relatively quite.

Get that thing out of there. You won't be sorry when you hear the difference.

I think what I'll do is get my headers installed first (they're sitting on the floor), and since I'm getting a cutout anywy, I'll see how loud it is when it's capped. If I want more, it's coming out.

Did any of the Z28's have the cone of silence? My muffler never sounded that loud. Even after gutting the cat, it still was too quiet for me.
