Thumbs up Removed oil cooler, now I have better oil pressure

Just thought I'd add in another vote for oil cooler removal. I threw mine out and now I'm seeing more oil pressure on my guage. Cooler had some gummy crap coating the inside of it, and I use Mobil 1 in my car! Things are much better now.

so have a lot of people been removing the coolers and finding the same thing? Obviously the pros of doing this are better oil flow, but what are the cons if any?

I agree, the fins inside of it are really small and get crap built up on them and plug it up easily. These things probably contribute to lots of oiling problems. Even if the oil does heat up a little more without it, that can't be any worse than losing pressure. Also 96-97 cars don't have this thing to begin with.

I dont think its an actuall oil cooler its just some coolant lines circulating around a chunk of metal just before the oil filter... atleast thats what mine seems to be. I have heard of people plugging or looping the coolant lines and adding an actuall oil cooler but Ive never heard of anyone taking it off. Did you just loop those 2 lines and screw the filter strait into the block? Also about how much did oil pressure change?

You have to go to autozone and get a "bypass hose". That goes straight from the radiator to the water pump.

Get 2, 5/16-18 X 1.0" long cap screws to replace the studs that are there and call it a day. Don't need that adapter.

Yep, another vote for removing that bastard. I had "late oil pressure" at startup, but the oil cooler delete solved this problem. Cleaner engine bay and one thing less to worry about.
Only downside, it takes now more time for my oil to warm up.

Yep, took mine off and the pressure was much more responsive. I think that thing just slows down the system after a long time. I had 150k on mine. Cleans up the engine bay quite a bit too.

All I did was take a new hose from O'Reilly's and attach it from the radiator straight to the water pump.

I only took mine off because I ran over an animal in the road and it caught on to my filter (bent the HELL out of it) hanging low due to the cooler. So when I was fixing it I just went ahead and took it off.

Mine will be gone when my motor comes back together. There will be more room and you will be able to run a bigger oil filter. If I remember correct, it should use the same filter as every other small block and there are like 3 different ones, but now there is more room to run a taller filter. Just a thought.

Why not just add a decent aftermarket oil cooler?

b/c if the car is not being road raced or any harsh driving then its really not needed.
