Re: Removed fuel rail and now car barely runs?
Yes I'm sure I greased them. Lots of grease this time, and the rail dropped right in. If there is a vacuum leak, 1) I can't hear it and 2) it was leaking before I started having this problem. The problem is intermittent as stated. Wouldn't a problem caused by a vacuum leak be constant?
I was reading the board last night and I saw several people who were having the same symptoms. Some of them had a bad egr (mine IS bad) some had a bad opti, and some had a bad maf. I'm about to go start the car cold with the maf unplugged and see if it does the same thing as yesterday. The egr seems unlikely since when i installed the headers I made a block off plate for the smaller egr fitting that went to the stock manifolds. Even if the valve is opening at the wrong time, it shouldn't matter since air shouldn't be able to get past the blockoff plate. If it's the opti, I'm about to find out. I'm heading on a 200 mile one-way trip in a couple minutes and if the opti is going out I'm about to have a hell of a tow bill.

I am telling you man... there is either a vacum leak or (dumb question) is it possible to reverse Hook up the fuel lines?
Also disconect the vacum hose to your power break booster and plug it... I wonder if your power booster is leaking. I worked on one a long time ago that got rupture and it was a huge vacum leak.
Remember your removed the fuel rail...... I dont even know if its possible to reverse the fuel lines but I would defenetely check on them
Also.. you said your EGR is Bad... ding ding ding... I hear bells...

It isn't possible to reverse fuel lines.
And if the egr is stuck open, the car will be hard to start. Does it sometimes cut off immediately after you crank it?

How about a sticky EGR? I have pushed mine in and out and it had cracked the carbon build up till it ran good again... One time I removed it and cleaned it out. I have over 152k miles on it... and still working but If I have never messed with it.. I bet it would have gotten frozen either open or closed..

Well, if it is stuck closed, you shouldn't have any problems. Usually when they are stuck open, that is when you have problems. But if yours is just sticky((I assume you mean moves sporatically) it might cause some problems. I disable mine so I don't have to worry about that.

Thanks for the replies guys.
The egr is throwing a code, but like I said, the egr inlet is blocked so no air is getting to (or past) the egr valve so that should not be a factor unless the pcm is making adjustments baded on the code.
If the car had a vacuum leak it fixed itself on the way down south. Maybe it adjusted the blms or something, but it ran bad on the way down, but by the time I came back it was running perfectly and the problem hasn't come back yet. On the way down I made it 3/4 of the way on just under a tank of gas, but it made it back on a half tank, so something has changed.
I might head out tonight and buy a vacuum tester just for the fun of it. This weekend I will take it by my buddy's place and have him scan it.
