Removable rear glass theory!
Hey guys-
I've been trying to think of a removable rear pannel for some time now. Need your imput (I wont be selling or anything).
1. HOW FREAKING COOL WOULD THAT BE!
more seriously-
here are my ideas
1. it has to fit inside the car (like T-tops)
2. avoid a T-bar if bossible
3. Find a way to keep rear defogger for you guys (mines a summer beater )
here are my questions-
If the glass peice could be removed, would it fit over the t-tops in the rear and over that "hump?"
if so my problems with the decroster would be minimal!
If it was a t-top design-
it would need all the weather stripping like the T-tops-
Id like the t-bar to be removeable
this way the glass could go UNDER the t-bar and it would look hella cooler
i was thinking a bolt in design like the C4 targa top-
I will probobly have holes drilled in the glass
and have them bolt into mounts that were welded onto the t-bars
Problem with a T-bar is the defroster- it might not be, but i am sure of how these things work. I imagine you need some kind of complete circut?
a final perdicament is the fitting-
I think weather stripping all around the glass like the tops and several mounts all around the car are the only way to go.
Unfortunatly, i can have ZERO flex otherwise the whistle at cruising will KILL me. And I cant overtighten the bolts either.
Nothing adheres to glass real well either. Velcro anyone?
maybe plastic, not a glass is the answer?
I'll draw up some prototype sketeches later with my ideas to simplify them
Anyone intrested in helping me/ doing this with me?

they dont count
they suck
they cost a grand + paint.
theirs replaces my whole rear section and is fugly as hell in person.
back to the lounge with you
shoo shoo!
I want to fold these things in half and have a mount in the car to put them in

Plus they look really really really stupid..... The 4th gen looks great w/ T-tops.... Looks freakishly out of proportion without the rear glass.... it's integral to the vehicle shape, not to mention the rigidity of the entire hatch.

Some guy around me has that RKSport rear hatch on his Z......
That thing looks like ****. I can't believe anyone would spend over 1g on that hideous thing. Anyway, I don't know about removing the rear glass, that doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

Ok... this would take some major fabrication but what if you setup two latches one on either side just like the T-tops. Basically think of the t-tops without the center divider and made of one piece of glass, but in this case it would be the whole back window.
You could use the same mechanism for a t-top just weld on extensions and create holes up by the roof line and down by the rear deck lid. Obviously they would be hidden once the glass was in place.
If you know anyone that can mold fiberglass you could get a really clean setup inside similar to what is on the tops but on a larger scale.
Its going to be heavy but I think it would prevent wind noise and leaking.
The only problem is that it is never going to fit inside the car.
That's probably more than you want to get into but I thought I'd through it out there.

I work for the company that made the back window for the f-body,
I might be of some help.
I know you cannot drill holes in the glass after it is tempered.
The glass will explode. You can make hinges that adhere to the glass. Some windows are done this way and some have holes.
The holes are drilled before the glass is tempered.
I can find out what is used for adhesive.
Let me know if I can help you out.

i dont mind so much if it doesn't fit in the car, but others mite.
I can easily get it in since i have no rear seats, but i know i definatly want to do this. It will give my car that unique touch (it isn't quite there yet )
