reluctor ring

What does it do? How important is it? And what if you forgot to install it?

Oh and shoebox if you read this, thanks for all the help from your cam swap pages, but you might add to install the reluctor ring after the timing chain for ******** like me.

It's for the crank position sensor, you car will throw a code without it. But, the code can be programmed out.

I have seen where people eliminate the reluctor ring to run another timing set. But, not sure what it will do with the stock setup.

ok, I was afraid that maybe it had something to do with keeping the crank sprocket on. I'll just ditch it then, too much of a hassle to pull the crap off to put it on.

If you still have the short hub, the sprocket could walk. I belive the hub holds it in place, and without the reluctor in there, you now have a gap.

Nothing in your sig indicates what year LT1 you are working on. The reason my guide does not mention it, is because the guide was made from my 1995 that does not have one. My pages say that the guides are 1995 specific, unless noted. Perhaps I will put in a blurb for those with later year LT1s.

cool that sounds good, my LT1 is supposed to be from a 96' Corvette. Do you think I need to pull the opti, hub, and timing cover back off and put the reluctor on?

If the hub does not get all the way on like ak95ta said, you could have an issue. Also your accessory belt spacing could be impacted if there is any kind of variance. I'd probably put it on to be on the safe side. Or...if you do not really need the CPS, remove the hub and put a shim of the same thickness as the reluctor behind it. You should be able to do this without removing the cover.

Can't he just use an OBD1 hub?

He could, if he had one and wanted to ditch the CPS. Either way, they hub he has now has to come off. He did not indicate he had another hub laying around.

I don't have another hub, so yes it has to come back off along with the opti, good thing I haven't put the wp or anything else on yet. Will I have to get another timing gasket now since I have to take the cover back off?

If you do the spacer only, you won't have to remove anything but the hub. If you want to put the reluctor on, then the timing cover will have to come off after you lower the front of the pan and you will likely have to replace the timing cover gasket (depends on if it tears up during disassembly).
