Reliability

As I look at the board today [10/17/04] I read sad stories about problems with aftermarket items. This is costly to the buyers in many ways. First is buying a product that fails, then having to replace that product, engine damage, not to mention being stranded. Towing cost etc.

My failure was costly but I wasn't stranded, Grantille MAF won't hold steady air/ fuel ratio on the dyno. I had sent it back to the manufactures once for replacement. Still no good. So I'm out $320. with shipping.

Nothing is 100% perfect, but as I read about these failures it seems that the after market manufactures need better quality control!

Whats your experinces ????????

Re: Reliability

every aftermarket item I have bought so far was 100% reliable, except 2 things. I bought a used accell 300+ ignition that crapped out on me, and my hypertech programer broke to. Other then that, everything else is good. If you want good stuff, you get what you pay for. Buy the good stuff the first time around, eg like coated headers, name brand nitrous kits, etc.

Re: Reliability

As I understand it Grantille MAF is supposed to suck. Although I've got to be honest I was skeptical when I saw it advertised. I mean a MAF that is supposed to net as much power as the claim? I figured it was just tricking the computer, which can be done with a tune. Plus you get the added benefits of the tune, which is modifyable unlike the MAF.

2 things that greatly effect any MAF is the 2 things everyone does. First pulling out the screen has more bad effect than good. It is there to straighten the flow of air for more accurate measurement. Without it, turbulence will throw off its performance. The other thing is oil in the cotton air filters. The oil can contaminate the wire in the MAF and effect its temperature and therefore the measurement of air flow through it. Not saying this was the problem in your case, just FYI.

As far as a modified MAF is concerned, if its size changes, the programming to interpret the readings from it must change also. Not sure how the Granatelli works to accomplish this but I'm sure it's not programming since they don't sell you new computer or a programmer to go with it. In your case I'm sure the dyno guy knew how to program for it.

Re: Reliability

As I understand from talking to Andy Jr. @ GMS their MAF is larger inside [I.D.] & is suppose to pass more air. The thing is that the electronic sender in them is not able to fuction correctly. So myself & others are out $330 +.

My other concen with this after market stuff; Valve springs breaking, Roller lifters causing push rod & valve spring breakage, etc. Being stranded miles from home with a broken engine really SUXS.
