Question Rebuilding an Alternator ?

Hey all, I am trying to rebuild my '95 Z's alternator. I used to rebuild the older '80's style GM alternators. It is winning and not fully charging ( voltage is there just not enough amps) so I suspect I have lost a diode. This one came right apart but is slightly different than the older ones. The main differance is it does not have a tri-diode that used to go out regulary on the old style. It has another (diode?) in it's place that looks different and I am not sure how to check it. Does anyone know? Or what it is called? All the other diodes and brushes etc... seem to be fine. I sure would like to save $100 not having to buy a rebuilt one. PS- I have a new battery. Thanks. Later>>>>>>

I tried to open mine yesterday but it woulndt give in. I found the rectifier re-placement on PartsAmerica.com last nite...they sell the Ball bearing and the brushes too.

Mine does charge but I notice the Alternator bearing its just barely begining to squeal

I dont know what part are you talking about cause I havent openned my alternator yet... I am suspecting it may be a Triac or a Mosfet. On either case you will have to have an electronics class before you can test both... I too wanna save 100 dollars.

I hope someone can give you more light.....

Dude I just remember... the alternator must have an Alternator rectifier (with a metal heat sink) and a voltage regulator (most likely a plastic part)

Parts america sells the Voltage regulator too

I know this is of no help, but im bored anyhow. I got all powdercoated parts on my engine(including the alternator housing). So, when it goes bad and I need replacement parts(since most places dont carry the right singe parts). I just buy a new/reman alternator, rip it apart, rip mine apart and put the new good parts into it. Has worked on every powercoated alternator i have ever had. And is usually just as cheap/easy as it is to find the correct single parts.

Re: Rebuilding an Alternator ?

I have been rebuilding my 95 Z28. Got it all done last year it cranked up the first time and sounded awesome. Then the starter went out. I bought a new one and installed but it did not engage with the flywheel. I guess it needed a shim. So I fixed that. Installed new motor mounts set the car back on the ground go to start the car and there was an abnormal buzzing sound in the ignition and the alternator started to smoke. Can someone tell me what the problem is. Can I rebuild my alternator? Did the smoking do to much damage. The car battery was new. I was all excited. then this happened. My husband had me try starting 3 times, each time smoke came out of the alternator. Help.
