Rebuild this winter, porting questions

Ok so i messed up pretty badly with porting my MAF (for those of you who have read my other thread "Ported My MAF") Well after doing that, i don't feel like screwing up much more. I would like to port my heads and intake this winter seeing as i'm going to be doing a rebuild and putting new gaskets on. The heads and intake will be off the car most likely when i do, or so i plan. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas of how to do this cleanly, in a wise way, a good way, and if you just have any comments. I want the actual intake where the throttle body is to be bored to meet a 58mm incase i ever get one in the future, or is that not a good idea until i get one? Also, how wide should i open up the heads and intake? How wide/open is an LT4 intake? Comments, answers, ideas, all welcome. I want to learn from my last mistake of the MAF!

Send the heads to a porter and get um done. Ya could make it run worse with a home port and never done it before.

Re: Rebuild this winter, porting questions

I did a home port on my heads twice now and have had good results.

Read this thoroughly- http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm

You'll realize that if you are asking "how much can I open this up" you are asking the wrong question. It's not about taking out as much material as possible, it's about taking material out in the right places. If you "hog" the port out by taking out too much material it will become lazy because you killed the velocity of flow in the port.

With that said, don't expect to even come close to what the pro's pull out of these heads because you won't. This is my second homeport job and the heads flowed in the mid 240 range on intake before a valvejob. It's not bad, but it's also not what the reputable porters on this site are getting.

Ok, thanks. Like I said, I'm wanting to learn about all this stuff before I fubar my intake system. I definitely would have fubar'd it going by the "how much can I take off" theory. Thanks!

No problem. I think it would be a good idea to just worry about one thing at a time. Example: do research on porting the heads, go real slow. Only when you have completely finished them should you worry about the intake.

Also, go by a local machine shop and ask if they have a junked aluminum head so you can practice on it, and see how fast your bit cuts the metal. Do you already have a die grinder?

Now that you mentioned it, it would be a good idea to get a scrap head or something to practice with. I planned on using a high speed grinding bit for my dremel tool. I know it's not going to go very fast, I was thinking it would take atleast 3 days (I work) to get the intake done. Here's my plan...

-Research until I am all knowing about porting
-Make a sketch of how much I'm going to take away
-Take it away
-Polish
-Reassemble
