Rebuild?

Hey guys, My Z has 240,000 miles on it and it still runs good. Yesterday my wife took our 15 year old daughter out driving and she pulled out in front of someone and got hit. Luckily, really only damage is the front right fender, bumper and wheel. The steering is funny due to the wheel getting a shot. I figure while it's gonna be down for repairs I might as well start my rebuild project. I'd like to get the motor and trans rebuilt. On average, what does it cost to have the motor rebuilt? Do you recommend me doing it myself? I mechanically inclinded but never rebuilt and engine before. Is it possable to pull the engine from the top? Or is it a must from the bottom? The car is a 95 Z28, stock everything. Thanks for any help.

If you do it yourself you can get a rebuild kit for like $500 then whatever machining costs you. Just depends on how stuff looks when you get in there. I think my machine shop bill was like $200? to balance everything and inspect, bore, and hone my block. LT1/LT4 rebuild book is a good thing to use. Used it on my first build.

This is my opinion,so take it FWIW.I would buy an engine from Victory engines and a trans from Cahill performance trans. If you havent done it before,it isnt worth the risk of making a mistake. It will cost a bit more, but should be worth it in the long run...Good luck with it.
