Look at the radius on the big end of the rods journal there is a large radius and a small one the large goes out. But I do believe the flatter in is on the small side radius so they go inboard.

I was wondering the same thing. Im putting my motor back togather and I when I pulled out my motor and took the motor apart. My buddy inspected my work (ROOKIE MISTAKE) and some of the rods OPEN END was facing each other. HENCE, I had some bad rods that were beating on the crank and I grinded some down to the metal. To the point that it changed the color of the rod. Also I had the MAIN caps crossed up as well. Im wondering if this is the reason why I was having oil problems at WOT and why it would not idle?

Good photo from Shoebox. That should give a good visual help.

Another verification of correct orientation:
The "dots" on the rods will face away from each other and in other words face the crank.

Another double/double tripple check:
The left side rods, (1,3,5,7) have the dots facing engine front.
The right side rods, (2,4,6,8) have the dots facing engine rear.

And another thing that is important. The pistons.
All of the pistons (if they are stock GM LT1) must be installed so that the arrow on the piston top faces the front of the engine.
(thus if the pistons were removed from the rods at one point in time it is possible to make a mistake and re-assemble the piston on the rod "backward").
Right side pistons all face arrow forward and left side pistons face arrow forward, (thus the 4 valve reliefs).
