rearend is leaking???

My car is leaking gear fluid out of the the pumkin from where the yoke from the drive shaft is connected. I am looking at the Chiltons book and it shows that there is a seal that goes there. My question is does anyone know if that is the problem and if so is it pressed in? Do I have to take off the cover to the pumkin and do anything w/ the pinion gear or is this an easy project? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know very much at all about rearends so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're talking about the pinion seal you would need to disconnect the driveshaft from the differential, the Chiltons manual will show you how without a problem, its not a hard thing to fix.

That's what I was talking about. What I am wondering though, is that what the problem is or could something else have failed to cause the leak. I was also wondering if I need to open up the pumpkin to fix this or is it just drop the driveshaft, disconnect the yoke and change the seal. I hope that's all I have to do but before I get started I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting into. Has anyone else had this problem before?????

The pinion seal leaking on our 10bolts is quite common.

Thanks guys. So I'm assuming I don't need to open up the pumkin to fix this problem. It should be an easy fix. (just drop driveshaft and remove yoke)

ok i been through this about a month ago . . its your pinion seal . . heres how you do it . . drop the driveshaft mark the yoke ,driveshaft, the nut for the yoke so you can torque down to where it was . . for the not in the yoke you will need 33mm socket . . .when all thats out pop the old seal out with a flat head put the new one in . . then torque everything back together . . then open up the pumkin drain fluid put a new gasket in and re fill with gear oil and limited slip additive .. then your set . . let me know if you need me to clear something up i was in a hurry typeing . .

Mine was leaking before I put the 3.73's in so the seal was replaced and it still leaks . Guess its something I'm doomed to live with.

NEED HELP. I changed out the pinion gear and I forgot to mark the nut. Now when I put the car in gear I get alot of vibration. Any way to find out what to torque the nut down to.

Pinion shaft lock bolt = 96 in-lbs.

But! You were suppose to see how many in-lbs in rotational force it took to turn the pinion while everything was still together, mark the threads, and count how many threads were exposed. Then after you put it back together you were suppose to tighten the nut to your marks then check the rotational force in in-lbs that it took to turn the pinion and make it 10-15 in-lbs more than the measurements that you recorded earlier.
