Rear End Woes Help Please!!!!
Rear End Woes Help Please!!!!
Hey guys not to long ago my rear end in my 95 formula strted whining badly. I had a 3.73 gear in it when it began to whine. I now have had the rear completley redone with a new zexel/torsen posi new 3.73 new bearings and all. I went to pick it up tonight and when i got their the mechanic that did the work on my rer end told me that their was going to be a whine in the rear end due to the new torsen. He told me that he called slp and slp told him that since these were pull out units that they were going to whine like that. Is this true or does he just not know how to set up rear end properly??? Please let me know i dont want this guy to screw me.
Thanks,
Heath

I also forgot to mention that the reason i got a new posi is because the sheeve pin in the old one broke off and twisted around inside the carrier so bad that the shop had to cut it in half to get it out.
the gears are motive 3.73's and he went into the whole spill about how perfect he set up the rear end and how everything was setup on the money and blah blah blah blah. i didnt believe him for a second.
do you guys think that the new gear is screwed up now?? Hes driven it for about two miles since he put the new gear in. Would not having the gear set up properly for this amount of time make it never be able to get a good wear pattern???
Sounds like the guy didn't set it up properly, too much backlash makes gears whine, if the gears are new the back lash should be .008 to .012. you should ask the tech how much backlash he's got. If he can't answer or tells you more than that tell him to redo it. The gears come with instructions that tell him the spec., and he should have the correct shims to make the backlash fall within the spec.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the replys and help. I went back up to the place and told the mechanic that the backlash should be set up between .008 and .012 and he said that he put it exactly on .008. I also called torsen and slp and they told me that their was no way that the carrier is making that much whine. Is their any way that it could since it is gear to gear and has no clutches?? He said that he was goin to go ahead and pull it apart once more and check everything out to see if he possibly missed anything. He also said that he still thinks it may be the carrier???
Oh well at least hes gonna get another opinion from another shop to see if he may of missed something.
Thanks,
Heath
