rear end is making a griding noise

a friend with a '95 z28 droptop with 96k miles suddenly has a loud grinding noise when she's not giving it gas... she's got a m6 and when she gives it gas everything seems normal but as soon as she gets off it there is a loud grinding noise comming from the rear.

she said that its always been a noisy rear end. the car has been autocrossed quite a bit and they don't think the rear fluid has ever been changed... how toast is that rear?

Hmmm check the rear end fluid first.

Grinding=bad I'd start looking for a new gearset, and probably take it to a shop and get someones opinion.

Time for a new set of gears, bearings...I had the same problem...took the cover off and had a few of the teeth laying on the bottom of the housing

I had the same thing happen to me on my M6 and turned out it was the gears. Thats the most likely problem. But I agree, have it checked out first.

Check the pinion nut. I had two come loose, one in my 93 z, and it hummed, the second was my 95 ta, it came really loose, let the pinion gear slide back and hit the posi section, sounded really bad! But tightened it and it was fine, did chew up the posi a little. Pull the cover first obviously, but check that pinion nut, and if loose, use locktight and torque it down ood!

I had a grinding sound too.... ended up being the bearings. Regardless of what anyone suggests here... you will never know unitl you open her up and see the damage first hand.

I wouldn't wait either, as it may make things worse as one broken component will surely strees the others.
