Rear End ?????
Rear End ?????
hey…I have some questions on replacing the RING and PINION on a 95 Chevy Z28 rear end!!!.....ok im going to do it my self cause I don't feel like spending 3456789 dollars on some one else to do it...and ive done it b4 on a Chevy truck...ok I know I need lube...but would I have to replace the Pinion Bearing? or would I have to replace both the pinion and the outer bearings......and would I have to get the bearings pressed back on the pinion or what? I mean if the bearings aren't bad inside the rear end. I mean its only what....8 years old.....that's not that old...my brother had to change his in his 74 vett cause of its age...but what would I have to do and get?? I have 3 73 ring and pinion! to replace my 3.23 auto!!
It's highly recommend to replace the inner and outer pinion bearings and their races as well as the carrier bearings/races. Could you get away with not doing so? I'm sure you could but I don't personally believe in doing crappy work on my car or any other
All the needed bearings come in the install "kits". The bearings need to be pressed on. In order to help initially set pinion depth I used the old bearing, removed just enough of its ID to slip it on the new pinion, fwiw.
I take it you have a depth gauge to read pinion depth and backlash? Don't forget to reprogram the PCM to account for the new gear ratio. I would also recommend a solid pinion spacer from Ratech to replace the crush sleave.
Remember these rearends take a lot of abuse and are relatively fragile. Using good bearings and fluid whenever taking them apart is just good preventative maintenance, IMO.
