Angry Rear Brakes squeek ALL THE TIME

Hey guys,

The problem is that my rear brakes squeek all the time when i am not on them but the noise goes away the second i step on the brakes. Sometimes around turns it gets worse. I looked at my pads and I have a little less than half the meat on them, so its not that. And i sanded down the rotors with sandpaper to see if it was a little inperfection on the rotor.. but they still squeek all the time. its worse on the rear passenger side then driver side. the fronts dont make any noise.. what can i do to fix this.. it is driving me insane!!!!!!!!!!

From: Somewhere between a shotgun barrel, and a blood spatter on the wall.
at any napa you can buy this spray on stuff called "anti disc-brake squeal" or something along those lines... its a coating you spray on the back of the pads... its suppose to absorb all that high frequency vibration (sound) i haven't tried it yet... so i don't know how well it works... but its a shot and its only a 5 dollar can of spray... but you do have to get the brakes off

Sometimes the pad retainer clips get bent toward the rotor and the rub until you it the brakes and they bend away. I would take the caliper and bracket off and reposition the pad retainer clips. Apply a little bit of sil-glide or eqivalent brake grease on the clips where the pad slides.

Here are some things to look for:

Clips rubbing on rotor-check for light scratches in the rotor surface
Bracket rubbing on rotor (usually around turns)-check axle endplay
Wear indicators rubbing on rotor-check pad wear, check for bent wear indicators

If the sqeak goes away when you hit the brakes, you dont need the anti-squeal spray. I hate that stuff anyways. It's just a sticky mess. It doesnt come from the factory..so why would you need it now?

Hope this helps

Jason

Another thing...How many miles are on your car? Does it have an auburn cone-type posi from the factory? I know some formulas do. Sometimes when those cones wear a lot they move closer to the outside of the posi....causing excessive axle endplay. The axle moves out around corners and forces the brake rotor into the caliper bracket making an awful grinding noise. You can see the bracket rubbing on the rotor.

My rear brakes do it too. I've tried replacing, in order,

new pads,
new pads and blue stuff on the back,
new rear from Strange with brake mounting plates,
new powerstop rotors .. and new pads.

One thing I noticed is when I put the new rotors and pads I watched the wear pattern on the rotors. At first the outer pad was only contacting the rotor at it's edge, but as it wore down over a couple of months it made more and more contact with the rotor. Now I can see that the pad is finally rubbing completely against the rotor. It seems like the only explaination is that the caliper is not holding the pad parallel with the rotor. I think the calipers have "stretched" out some. Maybe the previous owner drove it with the parking brake on? That would surely heat things up a lot, and maybe distort the caliper. Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing the calipers.

They squeek ALL THE TIME and it drives me crazy!!!
