Rear Brake Rotor Job

Hey guys...

I found out recently that when I had my rear brakes done, the rotors weren't turned. I've been talking to people and they said it would be easy for me to remove the rotors and have them turned by a shop myself. This sounds well and good, but I read a description that involved some complicated instructions about bearings, etc etc. So for the REAR brakes what exactly is involved in the removal of the rotor for turning and possible pad replacement? Also what tools will I need?

Thanks guys!

They are as easy as the fronts to remove. Remove wheel, caliper and the rotor is ready to come off. The caliper is held on by two 15mm hex head bolts-no special tools needed. No bearings to mess with. Don't let the calipers hang by the hoses. Some people remove on caliper bolt, then loosen the other and pivot the caliper out of the way.

Supposing these are OEM rotors and are below minimum thickness, of which im not sure yet, how much should I plan on for new rotors?

Why do you think they need to be turned? I wouldnt bother unless you're trying to cure a pulsating brake pedal and you're sure its the rear brakes. Even then they should really be replaced, not turned. IMO turning is only a temporary fix which reduces the rotors effectiveness as a heatsink.

FWIW I've never seen anyone warp the rear brakes on these cars. They're plenty big enough as is and they only do ~30% anyways.

Look online for part suppliers that are in your area to see what they offer. Origninal replacement types are not that expensive.

If your pads do not have much wear or any grooves worn in them from the old rotors, you should be ok. It is optimal to replace rotors and pads at the same time. If you pads have a couple of light ridges on them, just hit 'em with course flat file to true them up. If they are worn enough to be tapered, get new ones.
