Rear axle Differential
Rear axle Differential
Ok.
My 96 is at 98,000 miles and I bought it at 79,000 and I have no idea if the differential fluid has ever been changed.
I hear that you should change the fluid every 20,000 miles but everyone I know never changes it.
So! for those who have waited a long time to change their differential fluid...did you run into any problems after the change?
I was thinking of putting in an aftermarket cover to give it a diferent look and also provide a better maintenance that has a drain plug. So should I change the fluid and do this or does it not really matter?
I know the issues of a tranny being neglected and a fluid change may destroy it but I wasnt sure if the rearend has a similar effect after a neglected fluid change. I wouldnt think so but hey...im not a mechanic so thats why im asking!
Thanks

It shouldn't hurt anything to do a fluid change. I did one right after I got it in '99 with 60k on it. I ended up replacing the bearings because they were chewed up. Just make sure you inspect everything if you do the fluid change.
