Question Really..Really stupid question...

OK... im new to the " actually get into knowing about enignes" thing.. my engine is being fitted with a new cam and timing chain and etc..etc.. anyways.. My mechanic told me that my engine was 30 over.. i have heard this phrase many time but i never bothered to ask what it meant? so... what does it mean?

It means it has been overbored/rebuilt at some point. If it has a stock crank, then you have a 355 CID motor.

Speaking of crank..... he mentioned something about that also not being stock/GM part... I bought this car from a military guy thats no longer around . so i cant find out exactly whats been done to it... All i know is it was fast as hell... faster then my friends 2000 ws6 by quite a bit... then i broke a lifter and it messed up my cam... wich is why its in the shop now... other questions now... 355 cid ... good? bad? HP? any info would be greatly appreciated

If it has a different crank it could be a 383 (could also be a 396 or something else but 383s are most popular)
There's really no way to tell how much HP you have (simply because you don't know exactly what you have) unless you take it to a dyno.

30 over means the cylinders were bored .030" larger than stock and it was fitted with new pistons to match. That is what increased the cubic inches. It may have been "stroked" as well and that is why you have a different crank. You may have a 383.

My mechanic made mention to the heads but wasnt 100% sure about them.... and the CAM.. thats a whole nother story.. when the lifter broke it messed the CAM up.. when he took the CAM out he didnt have any clue what it was... there was no name.. but some numbers and letters.. i took the bad CAM to a performance place in town to see if he could figure out.. but to no avail... so i ended up buying a new CAM a CC 305.. it seemed to be the best one for what i was trying to accomplish ... my mechanic and the guy at the performance shop agreed.. I posted a Thread a few days ago asking if anyone knew what the old CAM was but didnt get any responses... Now that i know its a 383 i pray to god i got the right CAM...

CC 306 would've been a better choice.

Yep... especially on a motor with increased displacement.

Good find, man

Mike
