Rattle when engine is cold.

When i drive my car when its cold i have like a rattling. Once the car warms up it goes away. When it first started happening i was thinking ok now I have a lifter problem, which didnt make since bc this engine only has 3,000 miles on it. But it doesnt sound like a lifter, its a real fast rattle, prolly over 5 hits per second. Anyone have any ideas, also it cant be a knock bc it sound like a peice of exhuast maybe rattling and it isnt that kinda sound. The engine has great oil pressure. Anyone have any ideas??

If it goes away after it warms up its probably just piston slap. Forged pistons have a tendancy of making more noise than hypereutectics.

Cool Re: Rattle when engine is cold.

probably because you don't have a gas with a high enough octane i have a 97 camaro SS and when i first got i put some 87 octane gas and it pinged when it was cold outside before the car heated up. so i put 93 octane gas in it and it hasn't done the pinging since

mine has started to do this since it has gotten colder. When i start it up in the morning when its really cold it will make a slight rattle or a tapping for about 10 seconds. After that it goes away, and my oil pressure and everything else is normal. Its probably just piston slap like the other guy said. And since this guy has a 357, i think he knows what octane he should be filling up with

HAHA, yea I always put 93 in my car unless al they have is 92, nothing under that ever, I will even put 94 in it if the gas station carries it. I have heard of piston slap alot but what exactly is it?? How does something like that not damage an engine real quick??
