RAPID overheating

I was driving to work this morning when all of a sudden about 3 min into my journey my temp guage went from about 180 to 250 in about 30 seconds. It started to approach 260 and i immediatly pulled off and shut down. I happen to have coolant in my car so i bled the system and added more coolant about half a liter went in. I then started it up after the fans had been running for 5 minutes (fan switch), the guage was back down around 180 and about 1 min later it started again. I stopped again and let it cool down, I had to do this once more before coasting into the parking lot. I have delt with overheating before but never so fast. I drove from michigan to lousiana in this car 1 week ago and it had no problems with its brand new e.w.p. but i noticed the car would get hot down here so i put prestone super radiator cleaner in the other day by draining the radiator and putting it in (not the radiator flush, the large bottle for "neglected systems" that you are supposed to leave in for 3-6 hours). I drove it yesterday without any problems and did not change anything from then so i am stumped as to why it overheated out of nowhere like this. I was just wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this and maybe give me some insight? Thanks

Re: RAPID overheating

I have, my eletric water pump shorted out. Then I got a new one and 2 days later that one went. Check your fuse in the EWP circuit.
