Ram clutch info/ Novel inside
Well Ive searched and I found no info here on the board about anything other than the RAM HD stock replacement. I went to Rams website and found they offer some seriously aggressive clutches for LT1 cars.
I spoke to John in the RAM tec dept. and after speaking to him I decided to go with the 6000 series clutch pad. Its uses a 6 puck Bronze metallic pad w/ poly-coil springs for load damping. Its rated to handle 580rwhp. It recommened to use with a stock flywheel since the fricton material on the clutch "loves" our flywheels. This clutch will chatter since it is a very aggressive friction material but it was said with the right amount of clutch controll in can be mostly avoided if needed.
He ask me about the weight, rear gear size , tire size of my car before recommending me a clutch. He says the stock 3:42s is to low for aggressive clutches and would recommend a 3:73 at a minumum but he would like to see 4:11 for a final drive ratio of 11:1 (stock w/ 3:42 is 9:1 ratio) It has something to due with clutch load by combining all the above metioned variables.
Basically he won me over with his knowalge and he is also a real nice guys to talk to!!.
On last thing!! Hes working on a 2,400 pound pressure plate to work with our cars right now. Should be a nice option for a better grip with Stock type pad replacements or agressive materials.

thats interesting, I had the the "heavy duty" ram clutch that is suppost to handle up to 400hp, lets just say that was a big fat lie. The mods I had at the time I would be surprised if I saw a little over 300hp at the crank. I launched at the track, burned the clutch up on my second run (the clutch had about 3K on it by then) I drove home from the track with the clutch slipping all the way home in 6th gear. I pulled the transmission and inspected the damage and the pressure plate was practically toast, the clutch pad was worn bad and my brand new SLP steel billet fly wheel was left with burnt scald marks all over forcing me to get it resurfaced.
I wasn't a satisfied customer to tell the truth, I don't know if it was my fault though because I was using a steel billet fly wheel? But I doubt it..just my .02

I ended up with a Ram hd in a basically unmodded daily driven 97 LT1 (don't ask why.) The chattering was horrible and never really improved. In reverse, the car bucked and shook. I finally had it replaced and found my fly wheel was also heavily marked up. Some additional 2 cents.... steve c
