ram air under the car to cai

i wanted to do a "ram air" under the car by cutting the splash gaurd right under the cai. ive done a search on here for the last 2 hours and didn't get anything. i did find a website that had step by step instructions but it wasn't the one i was looking for. http:\\www.charm.net/~mchaney/ramair/ramair.htm That is something like what i want to do but a little nicer. i remember someone making one that went up to the air dam, and also included a block off plate that could be closed during rainy days. i've already bought the sheet metal, nuts and bolts and have the tools i think im gonna need. if anyone knows of or has pictures and instructions plz post here. thank you!

I used that same guide when doing mine. Yeah, mine looks way nicer than his. Mine looks professional. His looks kinda sloppy. It's really easy to do, I just drew a template first, cut it out, tested the fit, and then re-cut another one to fit perfectly. I can e-mail you pics, but I'd have to send 3 e-mails cause they are high quality pics.

oh yeah, my under the car ram air goes to a moroso cai. I was trying to find a way to get a 90 degree pvc pipe, cut it in half, and route it to the cai. all that would be too much trouble and cause too many vibrations at high speeds though. just got a little anxious

This has been done my many people (including myself) in the past. Let me tell you that it is a pointless mod. If you want an actual Ram Air effect, you will need to seal your filter in a box and then scoop the air into that box. If you just put a scoop under the car, it will draw air into the area of the filter, but it will not pressurize the intake stream like a true ram air system.

Additionally, if you build a scoop that is big enough, it will no doubt be ripped off the first time you hit a speed bump or a steep driveway. Save yourself the time and frustration and just leave it alone. If you have to, cut a opening but leave the scoop out of it.

Scott does have another point of view on this. It may scrape against a speedbump, but I think scott is misinterpriting why some of us wanted to do this "pointless" mod.

***Disclaimer***
Please do not read on if you are just going to start some dumb war on ram air vs. cai or "forced" air etc... And not everybody is doing this because they want "ram" air

That being said:
I do not claim to have "true" ram air, but I do think it is an invalid statement to say that this mod doesn't do anything. When I bought my car, it had a huge hole cut in the splash guard. The only reason I did THIS mod is because the hole looked nasty and ghetto. It did make a little tiny bit of SOTP difference, but not enough to merit doing the mod if you DIDN'T already have a ghetto splash guard. All I'm saying is that it seems to me that any amount of rushed air or forced air directed at the CAI filter will help out a little. Please any gurus (i.e. shoebox, brent, fred) please chime in. I'm no expert, but I want superadobo808 to have the most education possible before he dicides to cut his splash guard.

edit: I don't think just cutting a hole there would do anything. I would think you would have to put the scoop there for any effect.

pics would be good, thanks

well, i dont think that i would get a ram air effect (if there is such a thing) but i noticed that the splash gaurd blocks off alot of incoming air and that the largest hole is up top next to where the cai goes down into the bottom left. now, when the you go wot, i would assume that the air would travel from the engine bay, down the hole and into the cai, defeating the purpose or hindering your cai. all i really want to do is supply and ample amount of cold fresh air to my cai. i recently had a water problem which fried my opti and water got up in my donkey dong and what not so i was hoping to make some kind of block off plate for when it rains. i never realized how much air gets sucked into the motor until i was having problems with the car. i took off the intake elbow and tried to start the car. the car shot 2 foot flames and started smoking. hehehhe. before i could tell my friend to stop he cranked it again. i watched all the smoke in the garage quickly disapear into the throttle body. he was just cranking it, not even wot. so to think that all that air was sucked in that fast without even pushing the gas, was a sight to see. so, like i said, i just want the motor to be able to breathe all it can breathe. thanks for the replys, keep them coming. send or post some pics plz. i want to start this project tommorrow cuz im off from work for the first time in 2and a half weeks.

Just take the splashguard off the car completly, you'll get the same effect.

I'd send you pics, but Bud M's is the nicest looking one I've ever seen.

Nice work Bud M!

I,m sure some of you have seen pics of my ghetto ram air.
I think it helps a little but its really not worth the effort I am putting out replacing squished ghetto ram air parts.....yeah its just dryer duct hose but its getting annoying smashing it everytime I drive into a driveway.
Probably gonna go with something else, I have been thinking of making a long slender type scoop to mount on the front that attaches to hose aimed at the filter but who knows.....

I did a similar thing with heat ductwork.

I thought it turned out pretty well, and complimented my CAI which is higher up in the bay then most. I didn't want to be pushing snow with the CAI. since I do snow drive it from time to time.

I emailed you instructions
The only time I've ever had it touch was one time when I ran it into a parking lot bumper but it's made from pretty stiff aluminum so it was okay. It never touches the ground. As far as performance gain, I think there is a little at higher speeds, nothing drastic, though.
