ram air hood mod [can it be done]

I looked at a site that did a dyno test with the hood open and closed on the ramair hood for a trans am , the chart says they picked up 10.7 hp and 9 ft/lb torque with the hood open.

Does any one know if you can cut some of the hood to pick up some of this hp from more airflow. I know they have it now so it drains but can it be cut and not suck water in.

just trying to get every little free bit of hp i can, i did the thottle body bypass and the muffler bypass, and cat is there any more.

thanks

you mind sharing that site?

Yes it can be done, search for ram air baffle. Fred (injuneer) has his trimmed. Don't expect much though.

the web site is,

www.ws6zxr.com

go to -- lt1/lt4 tec area

the post is --- links with in ...... excellent sources for lt1 info

then down to----- ws6.com mod dyno test

at the bottom of the test page it is under miscellaneous dyno runs

Ah yes, i'm familiar with ws6.com. I never noticed the misc section at the bottom though. Like i said, there are a lot of people who have done that, you just need to try a search for it.

Yes you can cut the rain guard out! I did it on my car but it sucks if you have to drive in the rain. My car is not a daily driver so I could careless.

I might just try to cut the bottom so the rain cant get in and see what happens , did it seem to help your car any.

I cut the entire front baffle out of the hood but didnt touch the rear baffle. I dont have the ram air hooked up . I did it to get cold air in the engine bay, I do notice that if its raining hard water does get in there.

P.S. when I look into the engine compartment now through the ram air ducts I can see about a 1/2 of daylight at the rear of the hood above where the rubber seal moulding is, all the way across. Kinda like a cowl affect

I wouldnt cut the bottom I would cut the top part. If you look in from the front you will see it. I used a dremel tool with the flex shaft to get to it.

When my car was still street driven, I took about 1/2" off the bottom of the front baffle (you have to reach through the "nostrils" with a flex drive on a Dremel), and about 1" off the top of the back baffle. That left some overlap between the two baffles, and it never leaked water when driving in very heavy rains.

After the car graduated to "track only", I cut both front and rear baffles completely out, and now if there is a light mist in the air and even if I'm only towing the car, it gets water in the filter panel. When I tow now, I push a big Moroso foam scoop plug in from the back to keep "stuff" out. Definitely not a good idea for a "street" driven car.

OK am I the only one that sees that on a dyno YOU ARE NOT MOVING. So your ram air is not getting air like when you are driving.
Oh well, I did notice a 1 MPH difference when I installed my home made ram air.

The original question has NOTHING to do with "Ram Air", other than the fact that he as questioning if the air flow through the baffles in the Ram Air hood was restrictive. As evidence of this restriction, he gave ws6.com's dyno results comparing the hood open (no restrictions over the stock airbox/filter panel), and with the hood closed (huge restriction over the stock airbox/filter panel). I think everyone here realizes the car isn't moving on the dyno, and the benefits of "ramming the air" due to high vehicle velocity will not be realized on the dyno.

But that's not the question... the question is "do the hood baffles restrict air flow?" And of course that restriction will exist whether the car is moving or standing still.

Or did I miss the point of your post?

How many have dynoed with the hood closed?

When I had my one and only dyno, it never occured to me to shut the hood, since I wanted the engine to be as cool as possible.

I have the SS scam, but it probably WOULD constitute a retriction compared to open hood on a dyno.

So I guess when one claims certain dyno results, corrected, that they should also indicate hood open or closed.JMHO
