my radiator has a leak in it (not big), and the shop is tellin me that it's a heavy duty radiator, so it costs $220....is that true?

any alternatives?

That sounds like an autozone radiator that is putting their 30 -40 percent mark up on it........Get on the phone and start calling all of the parts stores to find out how much they charge and if you are having the shop do it for you then but it and take it to them that will same you 40 to 60 bucks...... I just replaced mine and I think I paid about $170 for it.........give or take.....

For comparison, a brand new GM radiator is ~$190 wholesale ($376 list). It depends on whether they will just replace the core and put your tanks on it or replace the whole thing.
