Quick question re: water pump install (pics inside)

I'm in the middle of doing a water pump replacement on my '95 Z28. I have gotten everything apart and the old pump off, and I noticed that there is a piece stuck on the "drive shaft" of the old water pump, that looks like it is used to connect the water pump shaft to the shaft that comes out of the block.

I'm assuming I'm supposed to pull that "adapter" piece off, and put it on the new water pump, but I can't get that piece off of the old one. It's on there really good. Am I on the right track, and if so, how do I get it off and onto the new pump?

Pic of the old pump with the piece attached to the shaft, note the missing ball bearings :

Pic of the new pump, without that piece:

Please help ASAP!

u need that shaft yes, it is what drives the pump. it is most likely just frozen on the old pump, shoot some PB Blaster on it and u should be able to get it off of there. might have to beat on it a lil bit to get it off.

As stated above you need that shaft. The new water pump should have come with small 2 O-rings; they go on the end of each splined shaft (engine side and water pump side) and the small shaft slides over the splines and the O-rings keep crude out of the shaft.

Ugh, of course my water pump didn't come with the O-rings and I know when I take it back to Checker, they'll go "I don't know about any O-rings!"

Look at your existing O-rings; if they look OK, just reuse them. The O-rings only keep dirt out.

The o-rings are cheap if you can't reuse them. Part #12553792

Bump.

I'm taking a break from the job for now but I tried some PB blaster on the shaft and it's still really stuck. I've only tried pulling by hand and prying with a screwdriver though, are there any other ideas I can try for removing the little [explitive]?

Heat that thing up then try prying it out...see if that helps...heating it up should help...it did with mine.

Put a set of vice grips on it close to the bottem then use a pry bar on the vice grips.

Re: Quick question re: water pump install (pics inside)

I had to use vice grips myself and had to get new o-rings.
