Quick question...Oil Pan!
Quick question...Oil Pan!
Can someone please answer this for me.
I just bought a miloden oil pan pickup and pump from VRE. It is the standard size pan clearanced for stroker.
When I go to put the pan on it feels like the pickup is hitting the pan and the pan wont lay down flat. I noticed my stock pan did the same thing with the melling HV pump but I never ran it to find out if it worked.
My question is... Should the pickup itself be scraping the pan and require me to torque the pan bolts to make it seal? The pickup has that little bracket to keep it from sitting flush I suposed preventing it from blocking oil from coming in.
I installed the melling pickup and used one of the 4 bolts from the oil pump to screw the pickup to the pump (I didn't have instructions but I assume thats how you install it)
What should I do? Torque the bolts to force the pan on?

Re: Quick question...Oil Pan!
i did the same thing when assembling my engine, i had a pick up for a Melling 155, but I needed one for a 155HV, once i switched to right pickup there was plenty of clearance.
This is how I measured mine: take off your pan and lay your gasket on it, then a straight edge across the pan and measure down to the bottom where the pickup would go, then take a sliding rule square and hold it flat to the block with the sliding part over the pickup and you should have 3/8" clearance. I had to bend my pick up down a bit to give me more clearance. I hope I explained it well enough, but it was pretty wasy to do.

Yeah, I gove Vicotry an A+ from the dealings I had whith Nick, but on topic...
I'm running the same setup as you for the oil pan, the only clearance problems I ran into is that my dipstick was hitting both on the windage tray and the pans side rail (Could that be it?) and as for checking clearances, Playdough or clay works wonders when your trying toget the pickup set.

Re: Quick question...Oil Pan!
All I had to do Nick is slightly bend the dipstick tube so it was "inline" with the dipstick notch in the pan and it worked fine. And then was a little more bending of the dipstick tube to aim the dipstick in the hole for it in the windage tray.
Also I have a quick question for you, When I put the pick-up in and clearanced it for the pan I couldent get it to sit perfectly level, the front end if 1/4 off the bottom on the pan and the back is right around 3/8ths, this shouldent be a problem right?

Re: Quick question...Oil Pan!
OK Guys here are some pics of what it looks like. It was at night and my camera doesn't like to focus so sorry for the pics.
Do I simply need to bend the pickup tube itself down maybe 1/2"?

THIS shows how far my oil pan sits up when it is flat on the other side (non torqued)

The red square is the scratches from where the pickup I assume hit.

Re: Quick question...Oil Pan!
To me the pick-up strap looks smashed flat against the pick-up and the pick-up itself looks out of shape. Did it get damaged going in or installing the pick-up.
Also the scratches in the bottom are a hard call. As you've seen you have menuvure the pan around the pick-up and it more than likely scratched the bottom of the pan during that.

I say tap it down a little and see what you get. But I'm still saying you should check for sure thats it the pickup because I know I scratched mine a little manuevering it around to put it on, I still say check for sure; play dough or clay works great for this IMO
Re: Quick question...Oil Pan!
Im possitive the pickup is scratching the pan, I can feel it. The top of the pickup is not smashed down its just the pics, everything is in perfect shape. It was all very easy to install and no force was required behind worming the tube into the pump.
