questions about my power steering situation

well, on Friday, I did some donuts, then after that my steering was stiff was told by some fellow members my power steering is out. well, the other day I noticed that the belt was only halfway on the PS pulley, so today in auto shop, I put it back on all the way, but when I started the car, the belt just slipped right back to the halfway position. I think its doing this because for some reason the ps pulley isnt lined up directly with the alternator, meaning the ps pulley is more forward than the alternator one. any reason why it would be though? also, does the power steering have anything to do with the steering wheel "returning itself" the normal position after making a turn? thanks

the pulley can slip off and you better fix it soon or it might throw itself off and take other stuff with it

You should be able to visually check if the pulley is not in line. If it is not, either it has moved on the shaft or your p/s shaft could be broken. If you still have no power assist, remove the belt and see if you can pull the pulley/shaft off the front of the pump by hand. That would tell you the condition of the shaft. Sounds like you might need a pump.
